Sturbridge Finance Committee approves $95,000 landfill fund cap

Finance Committee · Meeting of May 28, 2026

Sturbridge Finance Committee raises landfill fund cap to $95,000 after winter pump failure. Health Director Ken Lacey told the panel a failed leachate lift station over the winter, plus unpaid hazardous-waste bills, drove the need to raise the pay-as-you-throw program's spending cap from $60,000. Members also approved a $4,100 reserve fund transfer for library building repairs and a $25,000 transfer to cover town counsel's "ongoing legal expenses," pulling the town's reserve fund from $150,927.63 to $121,827.63.

All three votes, plus approval of the April 23 minutes, passed 6-0. A member identified as Kevin pressed unsuccessfully for an explanation of a police department pickup truck purchase, saying "it's not unreasonable for the finance committee to say, I don't recommend a $100,000 pickup truck."
