Schools return $200,000 surplus to town
School Committee · Meeting of September 3, 2026
Sturbridge schools close fiscal 2026 with a $200,000-plus surplus returned to the town. A district financial official told the School Committee the district finished the year "in very good shape," turning back more than $200,000, including $160,000 originally appropriated for a new bus. The district also prepaid special education out-of-district tuition it legally could before the fiscal year closed, anticipating added costs this year.
Officials flagged a looming compliance deadline: the state's new PROTECT Act required a school committee policy on student-records warrants by September 1, and the district, which already follows an informal protocol, may seek emergency first-reading adoption in October. Separately, officials said they are tracking a possible one-time, roughly $112-per-student state grant tied to surplus millionaires-tax revenue, with status still unconfirmed. The district reported being fully staffed with bus drivers heading into a contract renewal year.
